for Week Two Day One

 

1.      Find Ephesus on the map. Describe Ephesus in John’s day.

Answer:    Ephesus is on the Aegean coast about half way on Asia Minor. It was a seaport and trade center. The was a great temple to Artemis there, and beautiful theater.


2.      What does Acts 19 tell about the church in Ephesus’ beginning?

Answer:    Paul began there baptizing 12 men who spoke in tongues when they were baptized. Paul began by preaching in the synagogues, but when he was ousted, he continued his teaching in a lecture hall. The movement grew and was so effective that sorcerers burned their scrolls used for sorcery worth wages for a year for about 137 men.


3       How does Paul describe the Ephesians in his letter to them?

Answer:    He says, “we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit” and “I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.”


4.      What does the textbook author say about the “Nicolaitanes”?

Answer:    The textbook author says there is no specific identity of the “Nicolaitanes,” but it is clear that their teaching are false.


5.      What about zeal for truth and correct doctrine displeased Jesus?

Answer:    Jesus was not pleased that their zeal for truth and correct doctrine was not accomplished in the spirit of love.


6.      Is that danger present in the church today?

Answer:    There are many instances where we can see the same attitude in the church today.


7.      What do you do when you decide someone is in error?

Answer:    This is for you to answer personally.
